Abstract Jambolan (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) is an under-explored fruit rich in polyphenols, which are associated with health benefits, such as increasing resistance to oxidative stress, inflammatory processes and cardiovascular, and platelet functions. These polyphenols can be obtained by extraction, but an efficient standard method remains a challenge. In this context, this work evaluated the impact of different pretreatments on jambolans to obtain bioactive compounds by aqueous extraction. An Air Circulation Oven (ACO) and Lyophilization (LYO) were used as pretreatments. In addition, the influence of mass, temperature, cycle, and time parameters were studied in the extraction methods used: Percolated Solid-Liquid (PSL), Conventional Solid-Liquid (CSL), and solid-liquid assisted by ultrasound (USL). The extraction yield was from 7.3% (ACO) to 46.3% (LYO), both using the PSL method. In addition, eleven phenolic compounds and six anthocyanins were detected by High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD), in expressive amounts of catechin and cyaniding in the LYO sample and, these extracts showed higher concentrations of bioactive compounds. The CSL method was more efficient on ACO samples and PSL on LYO samples. LYO extracts showed higher concentrations of bioactive compounds. Therefore, the use of a drying pretreatment results in extracts with a high antioxidant potential for application in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical markets.

Resumo O jambolão é uma fruta pouco explorada e rica em polifenóis, que estão associados a benefícios para a saúde, como aumento da resistência ao estresse oxidativo e aos processos inflamatórios, bem como mostram-se benéficos para as funções cardiovasculares e plaquetárias. Para obtê-los, pode-se fazer por extração, mas um método padrão eficiente permanece um desafio. Nesse contexto, este trabalho avalia o impacto de diferentes pré-tratamentos no jambolão para a obtenção de compostos bioativos por extração aquosa. Estufa com circulação de ar (ACO) e liofilização (LYO) foram usados como pré-tratamentos. Além disso, estudou-se a influência dos parâmetros de massa, temperatura, ciclo e tempo nos métodos de extração utilizados: sólido-líquido percolado (PSL), sólido-líquido convencional (CSL) e sólido-líquido assistido por ultrassom (USL). O rendimento de extração foi de 7,3% (ACO) a 46,3% (LYO), ambos pelo método sólido-líquido percolado (PSL). Além disso, 11 compostos fenólicos e seis antocianinas foram detectados por HPLC-DAD, em quantidades expressivas de catequina e cianidina, na amostra LYO, e esses extratos apresentaram maiores concentrações de compostos bioativos. O método CSL foi mais eficiente em amostras de ACO e o método PSL, em amostras de LYO. Os extratos LYO apresentaram maiores concentrações de compostos bioativos. Portanto, a utilização de um pré-tratamento de secagem resulta em extratos com alto potencial antioxidante para aplicação nos mercados alimentício, cosmético e farmacêutico.

ABSTRACT N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a thiol (-SH) with a strong antioxidant activity. This compound has demonstrated positive effects on chronic kidney disease, cancer, pulmonary insufficiency and other diseases. The aim of this work was to investigate the application of the Solution Enhanced Dispersion by Supercritical Fluids (SEDS) technique in the micronization of NAC using a 23 Central Composite Design (CCD) with 3 central points, as well as to assess the influence of active compound concentration, temperature and pressure on the particle size produced. The average size of the drug before SEDS processing was verified to be 709.82 µm while the best result led to a particle size of 2.86 µm, which means a reduction of about 248 fold. It was also observed that a reduction in particle size led to an increase in the dissolution rate with 100% dissolution.

Abstract BRS 369RF and BRS 370RF were developed by the EMBRAPA as a part of efforts to create high-yielding germplasm with combinations of transgenic traits. BRS 369RF and BRS 370RF are midseason cultivars and have yield stability, adaptation to the central Brazilian savanna, good fiber quality and tolerance to glyphosate herbicide.

As características tecnológicas da fibra do algodoeiro são determinantes da qualidade de seus produtos e de sua remuneração. Este trabalho objetivou estimar a divergência genética entre acessos de algodoeiro e ordenar os melhores, com base em um índice de seleção combinando todas essas características de interesse. Foram avaliados 248 acessos de algodoeiro, empregando-se análise multivariada (distância de Mahalanobis e agrupamento de Tocher) e índice de seleção baseado em rank médio via metodologia de modelos mistos (REML/BLUP). A análise de agrupamento de Tocher permitiu a estruturação populacional dos acessos, resumindo-os em 14 grupos divergentes. As acurácias seletivas foram altas para todas as características avaliadas, variando de 0,89 a 0,94, indicando situação favorável à seleção. As correlações entre as seis variáveis apresentaram magnitudes moderadas a baixas, não sendo possível o melhoramento de uma característica, via seleção indireta, em outra. A seleção simultânea para as características de fibra, com base no índice de seleção de Mulamba e Mock, mostrou-se promissora. Os melhores acessos para as seis variáveis, simultaneamente, foram 4S180, C96480, Giza75, 196Lasani11, Brown Egyptian, Early Fluff 316, C268-80 e 207MG-82607.

Technological cotton fiber traits are essential for the quality and remuneration of its products. This study aimed to estimate the genetic divergence among cotton accessions and assort the best ones, based in a selection index combining all the important traits. A total of 248 cotton accessions were evaluated using multivariate analysis (Mahalanobis distance and Tocher grouping) and a selection index based in average rank via mixed models (REML/BLUP). The Tocher grouping analysis enabled the structuring of the accessions population by allocating them into 14 divergent groups. Selective accuracies were high for all traits, ranging from 0.89 to 0.94, indicating a favorable scenario for selection. Genetic correlations among the six traits were moderate to low, making impossible the breeding of a trait, via indirect selection, in another. The simultaneous selection for fiber traits, concerning the Mulamba and Mock selection index, showed to be promising. The best accessions for the six traits were simultaneously the 4S180, C96480, Giza75, 196Lasani11, Brown Egyptian, Early Fluff 316, C268-80 and 207MG-82607.

Cotton cultivar BRS 335 is a midseason high-yield cultivar and has adaptation to the Northeast Brazilian savanna, yield stability, desirable resistance to main cotton diseases and good fiber quality. The cultivar BRS 335 meets growers' demands for competitive lint yield as well as fulfilling industrial textile requirements.

A cultivar de algodoeiro BRS 336 possui alta qualidade de fibra, adaptação às principais regiões produtoras de algodoeiro no Brasil e resistência à mancha angular. BRS 336 possui comprimento de fibra acima de 32,0 mm e resistência da fibra superior às demais cultivares em uso no Brasil.

Cotton cultivar BRS 336 is a high-quality fiber upland cultivar and has wide adaptation to the Brazilian growing areas, with resistance to bacterial blight. BRS 336 exhibited fiber length higher than 32.0 mm in all field tests. Also, fiber strength exceeded all upland cotton currently grown in Brazil.

O conhecimento da diversidade genética entre um grupo de genitores é importante no melhoramento, sobretudo na identificação de combinações híbridas de maior heterozigose e maior efeito heterótico e, portanto, na recuperação de genótipos superiores nas gerações segregantes. Os métodos preditivos de diversidade têm sido muito utilizados porque dispensam a obtenção de combinações híbridas entre os genitores e normalmente usam uma medida de similaridade para avaliar a diversidade entre eles. Foram avaliados 221 acessos do banco ativo de germoplasma de algodão da Epamig, por meio da distância euclidiana média e posterior agrupamento dos indivíduos, de modo a permitir escolhas mais apropriadas de genitores para cruzamentos. Para isso foram consideradas 11 características morfológicas e de fibra. Foi detectada grande diversidade genética entre os 221 acessos reunidos em dez grupos distintos. A maior distância euclidiana (4,36) ocorreu entre os acessos S 8186 e T-295-1-1 e a menor (0,25) entre os acessos TX CACES 1-81 e TX CDPS 177.

The knowledge of the genetic diversity among groups of parents is important to plant breeding mainly in the identification of hybrid combinations that show more heterozigosity and higher heterotic effect, and in the recovering of greater genotypes in segregating generations. The predictive methods of diversity have been used considerably because they discard the obtainment of hybrid combinations between parents. They often use a measure of similarity to evaluate the diversity, such as the euclidean distance. In this work 221 accessions of germplasm collection belonging to Epamig were evaluated using the euclidean distance and later grouping the accessions to get an alternative criterion to choose parents for hybridization. Eleven morphological and fiber traits were considered. A great diversity among the 221 accessions was observed and they were clustered in 10 groups. The largest euclidean distance mean obtained (4.36) was between the S 8186 and T-295-1-1 accessions and the smallest (0.25) between the TX CACES 1-81 and TX CDPS 177 accessions.

Dados da altura individual de dez plantas, obtidos de dez experimentos instalados em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e quatro cultivares de algodoeiro herbáceo, foram estudados, para determinação do número mínimo de plantas/parcela, necessárias para caracterização da altura média de plantas de algodoeiro herbáceo. Foram estudados cinco tamanhos de amostra na parcela, cada uma, contendo 2, 4, 6, 8 e 10 plantas. Os coeficientes de variação experimental e amostral e as significâncias observadas nas análises de variâncias, indicaram que parcelas contendo seis ou mais plantas, permitiram boa caracterização do porte médio das variedades de algodoeiro testadas. Os resultados sugerem, portanto que, no processo de caracterização da altura média do algodoeiro herbáceo, a avaliação pode ser mais rápida, além de haver uma redução na mão-de-obra de coleta e manuseio dos dados, em decorrência de uma diminuição do número de plantas amostradas na parcela.

Data of measurements of ten individual plants height, from ten randomized blocks design experiments, with four replications and four cotton cultivars, were evaluated to determine the minimum number of plants per plot for characterization of the average height in cotton. To reach the purpose of this work, five sample sizes in the plot were studied, with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 plants each. The coefficients of experimental and amostral variation, as well as the significative analysis of variances, indicated that plots with six or more plants allowed a good characterization of the plant height. The results showed that in the characterization of the height of the gossypium plants, the evaluating become fast and it can have a reduction in the labor during the collection and handling of the data, due to the reduction of the number of plants sampled in the plot.
